- Biographical Description
- John Archer was born circa 1802 and lived in Bridgetown (now part of Rahway, Union County), New Jersey. He was apprenticed or indented to Richard Archer and ran away in 1818 when he was 16 years old. He may have had African ancestry, although this is not certain. He was described by Richard Archer as having a "dark complexion." It is uncertain whether he was born free and later entered into an apprenticeship agreement or was born enslaved and received a promise of future freedom through an indenture contract.
