Biographical Description
Marceline was a Black woman born circa 1784. She was enslaved by Madam Despinose of Burlington, NJ. She ran away in 1804 and was pursued by an associate of Madam Despinose named Jean Andre Barbarroux. As these enslavers were French, it seems likely that Marceline knew how to speak French. Barbarroux's runaway ad for Marceline pointed out that she "speaks good English."
