- Biographical Description
-
Henry Dusenbery was an enslaver and prominent merchant and land developer who operated a storefront and a mill in New Hampton (in Lebanon Township), Hunterdon County, NJ, at the turn of the 19th century. His late-18th century mansion house and storefront have been preserved as part of the New Hampton Historic District. He also developed properties in nearby Mansfield-Woodhouse, Sussex County (present-day Mansfield, Warren County) and then in Philadelphia, where he lived for a while in the 1810s. He was a major in the Hunterdon County Militia in the 1790s, and consequently, he is often referred to as Major Henry Dusenbery in historical records.
Extensive information about Henry Dusenbery is available in the New Hampton Historic District records submitted in 1998 to the National Register of Historic Places (see National Register Information System ID 98000257, NPGallery). According to the research conducted for that submission, Henry Dusenbery was assessed for 1 slave on the 1790 Lebanon township tax roll (see continuation sheet section 8, page 13). - Keywords
