- Claus was a Black man who resided in the area of Preakness, Bergen County (now in Passaic County), in the early 19th century. His freedom status is uncertain. In 1805, he was convicted of murdering a close associate of his named Joe, who was a Black man enslaved by Mr. Van Orden of Preakness. According to the news reports that came out when Claus was convicted, his conflict with Joe stemmed from Joe's alleged love affair with Claus's wife. Claus was executed on June 28, 1805, in Hackensack.
