- Biographical Description
- Neptune was a Black man born circa 1785. He likely grew up in Haiti, or one of the other islands of the French West Indies, as his primary language was Creole French, and he was not fully proficient in English. He was an expert domestic servant and hair dresser and also had some experience with farm work. In the early 19th century, he was enslaved by James Kearney of Middletown Point (now Matawan), Monmouth County, New Jersey. He ran away from Kearney 1805 and headed to Trenton.
