Runaway ad for Elisha, by George Farmer, "Fifty Dollars Reward," Fredonian, February 8, 1816, p. 4.
- Event Description
-
A Black man named Elisha was sold by his enslaver, John Tucker of Rahway, to George Farmer on September 9, 1815. George Farmer had an estate called Belle Vue across the Raritan River from New Brunswick (in the vicinity of present-day Highland Park).
Information about the sale comes from a runaway ad that George Farmer published the following year when Elisha ran away from him.
At the time of the sale, Elisha was in jail for stealing. The jail location was not specified in the source, but it most likely refers to the Middlesex County jail, which was in New Brunswick. - Event Type
