Runaway ad and sale proposition for Betty, by Amos Day

Runaway ad and sale proposition for Betty, by Amos Day, "NOTICE," Sentinel of Freedom, and New-Jersey Advertiser, June 15, 1824, p. 3.
- Event Description
-
On June 14, 1824, enslaver Amos Day submitted a notice that a Black woman named Betty had left his household without his consent. Day lived at Connecticut Farms in Essex County, New Jersey (present-day Union Township in Union County). Day did not offer a reward for Betty's return. This was a follow-up notice as Amos Day had already informed the public a year earlier, in July 1823, that Betty had left. It appears likely that Betty stayed away the whole time, although this is uncertain (it is possible that Betty had come back to Amos Day's house and then left again in the interim). In this second notice, Day offered to sell Betty for $10 to anyone who wished to buy her. This might allow a pathway for Betty, or whoever was harboring her, to officially buy her freedom if they could come up with the $10 price.
