Runaway ad for 29-year-old woman, by Mrs. Penea, "Ten Dollars Reward," Federalist & New-Jersey State Gazette, April 27, 1802.
- Event Description
-
On April 6, 1802, a 29-year-old Black woman ran away from her enslaver Mrs. Penea of Mill Hill at Trenton, NJ. Penea published an advertisement offering a reward for the runaway's return, but the advertisement did not mention the runaway's name. Penea described her as a "French Negro Woman," suggesting that the woman likely came from the French West Indies and had been brought up in a French-speaking family. Penea suspected that the woman went to Burlington.
