- Event Description
-
On November 14th, 1802, a Black man named Jack ran away from his enslaver Hezekiah Smith of Piscataway, Middlesex County. At the same time, an 18-year-old Black woman ran away from enslaver John Woldron (or Waldron) of nearby Franklin Township, Somerset County. The two enslavers supposed that Jack and the woman escaped together. Smith and Woldron published a runaway ad offering a reward for the capture of the two runaways. The young woman's name was not mentioned in the ad.
