Runaway ad for Philip, by James Hankinson, "Twenty Dollars Reward," Trenton Federalist, June 13, 1803, p. 3.
- Event Description
-
On June 6, 1803, a 25-year-old Black man named Philip ran away from his enslaver James Hankinson. James Hankinson submitted a runaway ad to the Trenton Federalist newspaper on June 13th, 1803, offering a twenty-dollar reward for Philip's capture. Hankinson identified his residence as simply "Monmouth," which is presumed to be either a general reference to Monmouth County, or a more specific reference to Freehold, the county seat, which was often referred to as "Monmouth Court House" in this era.
