Event Description

On Saturday, February 16, 1805, a 35-year-old Black woman named Magdelaine ran away from her enslaver, Madam Clery, in Burlington, NJ. Magdelaine took her 12-year-old son Germain with her.

"Twenty Dollars Reward.
RANAWAY on Saturday last, the 16th instant, from her mistress, Madam Clery, residing in the city of Burlington, a Negro Woman, aged about thirty five years, named Magdelaine, of midling size, large face, big eyes, flat nose, had on a red flannel petticoat. Also, her son, aged about twelve years, named Germain, short big fellow, like his mother, had on brown pantaloons and waistcoat, yellow flannel shirt. Any person apprehending the said Magdelaine and her son, and securing them in Burlington goal, or so that their mistress may get them again shall receive the above reward, and all reasonable charges, by
