Slave sale ad for 6 Black boys and a Black mother with her son, by Kenneth Hankinson, "TO BE SOLD," Trenton Federalist, March 14, 1803, p. 3.
- Event Description
-
In March 1803, enslaver Kenneth Hankinson advertised the sale of 6 Black boys between the ages of 5 and 8, plus a Black woman aged 36 with her little son who was 2 and a half years old. The woman was enslaved for life. Kenneth Hankinson indicated that he wanted to sell the children with an indenture agreement that would allow them to be released at age 28, but if the buyer would agree to educate the boys and teach them how to read the Bible, then Hankinson would extend the indenture by 2 years, allowing the buyer to keep each boy in slavery until age 30.
Hankinson was also selling livestock. This ad (which was published in Trenton) did not list Hankinson's place of residence, but other advertisements of his around this time period indicate that he was a resident of Freehold, Monmouth County.
