Runaway ad for Hannah, by Simon Pyle, "Six Cents Reward," Trenton Federalist, June 3, 1805, p. 3.
- Event Description
-
On April 20, 1805, a 60-year-old Black woman named Hannah ran away from her enslaver Simon Pyle, who lived in Freehold, Monmouth County. Compared with other freedom seekers in New Jersey, she was remarkably advanced in age when she ran away. She managed to evade capture for 5 weeks by the time Simon Pyle submitted a runaway ad notifying the public that Hannah had run away and warning people not to harbor or employ her. Pyle offered a nominal reward of 6 cents for Hannah's capture and return.
