- Description
-
Springfield is a township in Union County, New Jersey. It was formed in 1794 from portions of Elizabeth Township and Newark Township, while this area was still part of Essex County. Springfield became part of the newly-formed Union County when that county broke off from Essex in 1857. Over the years, several new municipalities broke off from Springfield: New Providence (1809), Livingston (1813), Millburn (remained in Essex County in 1857), Summit (1869), and Cranford (1871). Thus, historical records that mention Springfield in the 18th or early 19th century may be referring to places that are located in one of these neighboring municipalities.
Note that there is also a different municipality called Springfield Township located in Burlington County. - Locality
