Description

Guadeloupe is an overseas department of France in the Caribbean consisting of the islands of Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, Marie-Galante, La Désirade, and two Îles des Saintes. Beginning in the early 17th century, French colonization of the islands led to the development of a sugar plantation economy that relied on enslaved African labor. Slavery in Guadeloupe (and other parts of the French Empire) was abolished in 1848.
