- Description

Orange is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, located west of Newark. In the 18th century, this area was part of Newark Township. In 1806, Orange broke off from Newark and was incorporated as a separate municipality. At that time, Orange was much larger than it is today, but the township would eventually break up into separate municipalities.
In 1834, the southern portion of Orange was annexed to form the new Clinton Township. In the 1860s, Orange broke up into several separate municipalities called Orange, South Orange, East Orange, and West Orange. Thus, this region of Essex County is now informally known as "The Oranges" and it consists of four separate municipalities with the word Orange in the name. Historical documents that mention "Orange" before the Civil War could be referring to locations in any of the four modern-day Oranges, since they were all part of one municipality during the slavery era. - Locality
