Paramus is a borough in central Bergen County, New Jersey, incorporated in 1922. The name Paramus was associated with this area since at least the early 18th century, but Paramus was not a separate municipality until much later. Since the colonial era, the community of Paramus and the surrounding area were part of a large township known as New Barbadoes. Thus, slavery-era records and census statistics for the Paramus area will be found among New Barbadoes township records.
In the mid-19th century, New Barbadoes township broke up into many different municipalities, and the area known today as Paramus became part of the new Midland township in 1871. By 1922, the majority of Midland township became Paramus, while other parts of Midland broke off to make smaller municipalities surrounding Paramus.
The Dunkerhook area in Saddle River Park in Paramus was home to a free African American community since the early 19th century. - Locality
