- John Schureman was a Reformed minister and an enslaver from New Jersey. He was born in New Brunswick in 1778, the son of U.S. Senator James Schureman (1756-1824) and Eleanor Williamson Schureman. He graduated from Queen's College (now Rutgers university) in 1795. He served as the pastor of the church of Bedminster (1801-1807), then Millstone (1807-1809), both located in Somerset County. During this time, he filed documents with the Somerset County Clerk indicating that he had multiple enslaved people in his household. He went to New York City in 1809 to serve as one of the pastors of the Collegiate Church, but returned to New Jersey in 1812 to teach at Queen's College and the New Brunswick Theological Seminary. He was the Professor of Moral Philosophy and Belles-Lettres at Queen's College and also served as the college's Vice President.
