- Biographical Description
- Jim was a Black man born around 1786 who was enslaved by Christopher Beekman. He lived at Beekman's household near the Six Mile Run church at the border of South Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, and Franklin Township, Somerset County. By the time he was 22 years old, Jim was known for his defiance and resisting Beekman's control. Jim's actions met with severe corporal punishment, and he had marks on his back from the violence he experienced at the hands of his enslaver. He ran away from Christopher Beekman in April 1808.
