- Biographical Description
- York (also known as John Smack) was a Black man born around 1770. He was enslaved by Joseph Gaston and worked as a miller and carman at Gaston's mill located on the Pequest River in the present-day area of Huntsville in Green Township, Sussex County (at that time, the village was still known as Pettit's Mill and was within the boundaries of Hardwick Township). After Joseph Gaston died in 1804, both York and the mill where he worked became the property of Joseph Gaston's daughter Martha Gaston Everitt and her husband Elijah Everitt. Six months after Gaston's death, York ran away from his new enslaver Elijah Everitt. York was about 35 years old when he ran away.
