Sam was a Black man born around 1780 or earlier. He lived in the northern part of New Jersey. He was enslaved by Benjamin Vincent, who was a resident of Paterson and also owned a farm at Pequannock in Morris County in the late 18th century. Whether Sam lived in Paterson or on the farm in Pequannock is uncertain. By 1805, Sam was living in the household of a new enslaver named Moses Jacques, who resided in Rahway.
Sam's original enslaver Benjamin Vincent advertised a young Black man for sale in 1799. As is typical for sale advertisements, the name of the enslaved man was not listed in the ad. It is possible that the man advertised was Sam and that Moses Jacques responded to the advertisement and purchased Sam in 1799. Sam's connection to the 1799 advertisement has not been definitively confirmed. (Review the profile for Benjamin Vincent to see advertisements that he authored.)
In August 1805, Sam ran away from Moses Jacques. - Keywords
