John Disbrow was a captain associated with the Van Wickle slave trading ring in Middlesex County, New Jersey. On March 10, 1818, he served as the captain of the sloop Thorn, which was chartered by Charles Morgan to carry more than 30 Black people from Perth Amboy to Sandy Hook, where these captives would be transferred to the brig Mary Ann, bound for New Orleans. John Disbrow testified as a witness before the grand jury in June 1818, when Charles Morgan, Nicholas Van Wickle, and several others were indicted on charges of taking and carrying away Black New Jerseyans to Louisiana without their consent. John Disbrow was not indicted as part of this criminal case.
His name was usually recorded as John Disbrow in the historical documents but was sometimes written down as John Disborough. - Keywords
