- Biographical Description
- Harry was a Black man born around 1783. His place of birth and the name of his original enslaver is not known. A newspaper ad published in 1805 indicates that Harry had experienced severe violence at the hands of his former enslaver, who broke Harry's nose, leaving a permanent scar on Harry's face. By the time Harry was 22 years old, he was living in the household of a new enslaver named Cornelius Vermeule in Bernards (formerly Bernardston), Somerset County, New Jersey. In 1805, Harry ran away from Cornelius Vermeule.
