Runaway ad for Phillip, by Charles Higbee, "Ten Dollars Reward," Trenton Federalist, May 4, 1807, p. 1.
- Event Description
-
A young Black man named Phillip ran away from enslaver Charles Higbee of Trenton, New Jersey. On April 20, 1807, Charles Higbee published a runaway ad in the Trenton Federalist newspaper offering a reward of $10 for Philip's capture and return. At this time, Phillip was aged 22 or 23. The advertisement did not say when Phillip actually made his escape. Note that Charles Higbee had previously published a runaway ad for Phillip in July 1806. It seems that Phillip ran away in the summer of 1806 and then managed to evade capture for over 9 months and was still at large as of April 1807.
