Slave sale ad for 17-year-old Black boy, by William Fox, "FOR SALE, a Smart Healthy Negro Boy," Trenton Federalist, February 16, 1807, p. 4.
- Event Description
-
In January 1807, enslaver William Fox advertised the sale of a 17-year-old Black boy near Baptistown village in Kingwood Township, Hunterdon County. The boy was bound to serve for another 11 years until age 28. Based on this timeline, it can be inferred that the boy was most likely born in Pennsylvania, where the state's gradual abolition law stipulated that children born to enslaved mothers were bound to serve for 28 years before they would become free.
