Slave sale ad for 23-year-old Black man, by Benjamin Vincent, "FOR SALE," Centinel of Freedom, February 26, 1799, p. 3.
- Event Description
-
In February 1799, enslaver Benjamin Vincent, a resident of Paterson, New Jersey, advertised the sale of a Black man, aged about 23. At the same time, Benjamin Vincent also advertised the sale of an active farm that he owned in Pequannock, Morris County.
The ad mentioned that the Black man was "brought up to the farming business" and could also "drive a stage" or work as a gentleman's servant. Benjamin Vincent was the owner of a stagecoach company that transported passengers from Paterson to other cities in the region. The Black man discussed here likely had experience working as a stagecoach driver on one of Benjamin Vincent's routes.
