- Event Description
-
On June 22, 1805, a young African man, aged 18, ran away from the Quarantine Ground in Staten Island. The Quarantine Ground refers to the site of the New York Marine Hospital, a facility where newly arrived ships were inspected by health officers and held for quarantine if communicable diseases, such as yellow fever or smallpox, were found on board. Enslaver Garrit Coffin, of the Fountain and Coffin store in Staten Island, issued a runaway ad for the young man, noting that he was a recent arrival from Africa and spoke very little English. The name of the young man was not listed in the runaway ad.
