- Description
-
Barbados is an island country in the Caribbean region. It was historically part of the British West Indies and was a leading exporter of sugar since the colonial era. Its early development was wholly dependent on slave labor and the plantation economy.
A significant number of early English settlers in New Jersey were plantation owners who relocated from Barbados to New Jersey in the late 17th century. These planters brought large groups of enslaved people with them from Barbados.
Bridgetown, Barbados, was a major slave trading port where captives arriving from Africa often landed first before being taken to other Caribbean islands or up to North America. For this reason, throughout the 18th century, many people of African descent arrived in New Jersey via Barbados. - Region
