Chesterfield is a rural township in the northeastern section of Burlington County, New Jersey. The township was formed in 1688 and originally included a section along the Delaware River. By the mid-19th century, a population center called Bordentown developed in Chesterfield township near the Delaware River. Slavery-era documents related to Bordentown may be filed under Chesterfield township. Bordentown broke off from Chesterfield in 1852.
The remaining territory of Chesterfield township has remained rural to the present day. Today, the three main villages in Chesterfield township are Crosswicks, Chesterfield (formerly known as Recklesstown) and Sykesville (formerly known as Plattsburg). Crosswicks is the oldest English settlement in the area; it was established in 1677 by a group of Quakers. - Locality
