- Description

Bordentown refers to a historical community along the Delaware River in the northeastern section of Burlington County, New Jersey. It has its roots in a colonial-era settlement called Farnsworth's Landing that was established by English Quakers around 1682. In the early 18th century, this settlement became known as Borden's Town. At that time, the community was not yet a separate municipality and was considered part of Chesterfield township. For this reason, slavery-era documents for Bordentown may be filed under Chesterfield township.
In 1852, Bordentown broke off from Chesterfield to form a separate township. A portion of the neighboring Mansfield township was also given to Bordentown in 1852. Bordentown further splintered around 1877 when the urban center of the community broke off to form the separate City of Bordentown, while the surrounding area remained part of Bordentown township. - Locality
