- Biographical Description

Mary Pope was an enslaver who resided in Mansfield, Burlington County, in the late 18th century. She was a widow by 1778 and had three sons named Joseph, Nathaniel, and John, as indicated by her will that she signed on February 19, 1778. Her will outlined the division of her property between her sons, but it did not mention any enslaved people specifically. Mary Pope died circa 1783, and her will was proved on April 21, 1783. She left behind property that included at least one enslaved person named Sip Quon. Her son John Pope, who was the executor of her estate and legatee, ultimately went on to manumit Sip Quon in 1786. Below is a copy of Mary Pope's will abstract, as copied from page 311 in the Calendar of Wills, Vol. 6, for 1781-1785.
"1778, Feb. 19. Pope, Mary, of Mansfield Township, Burlington Co.; will of. My body to be buried next to my late husband in Mansfield graveyard. Sons, Joseph, Nathaniel and John Pope, £150, to be paid out of the money lately left me by my brother, Samuel Black. Son, Joseph, the balance due me from him, by virtue of my late husband’s bequest, dividing the residue of his personal estate between myself and son, Joseph. Daughters-in-law, Sarah and Elizabeth Pope, my wearing apparel. Executors—son, John, of Mansfield, and my brother-in-law, Amos Wright, of New Hanover. Witnesses—Matthias Kerlin, Abbott Williams.
