- Event Description
-
Burlington County Deed Book A, Folio 164, contains a manumission record for Sip Quon, who was released from slavery on 24 July 1786 in Mansfield. Sip Quon's primary enslaver, Mary Pope, was deceased since 1783, and the manumission was performed by John Pope, who acted on behalf of the estate of Mary Pope. The manumission document states that Sip Quon was an adult between 21 and 35 years old, but the exact age was not recorded.
The document was entered into the book by the County Clerk (John Phillips) on 13 February 1787. The manumission record was signed by the Overseers of the Poor for the township (Joseph Shreeve and Abednego Wright) and Justices of the Peace for Burlington County (Thomas Fenimore and Israel Shreeve).
The source document was scanned by the New Jersey State Archives, which houses the original deed book.
Records on page 163 and 165 in the same book indicate that Sip Quon's family members, Gabriel Quon and Adam Quon, were also manumitted by the Pope family on the same day. - Event Type
