- Biographical Description
- Jenny was a Black woman enslaved by lawyer John Frelinghuysen in Somerset County, New Jersey, in the early 19th century. Birth records for her children Rachel (born 1804), Jane (born 1807), George (born 1809), and Arch (born 1812) have been found among Somerset County Clerk's records. These birth records indicate that Jenny's husband was Tom. The birth record for Rachel in 1804 indicates that she was born in Hillsborough township. The other children's birth certificates do not list the locality. It appears that Jenny lived in the Frelinghuysen household at Millstone (then part of Hillsborough township) while John Frelinghuysen resided there from 1804 to 1810. After 1810, John Frelinghuysen returned to his main property, now known as the historic General John Frelinghuysen House and located in the present-day borough of Raritan (but then part of Bridgewater township). It can be assumed that Jenny and her family moved back to Bridgewater with John Frelinghuysen.
