- Biographical Description
- Tom was a Black man who lived in Somerset County, New Jersey, in the early 19th century. He was the husband of an enslaved Black woman named Jenny. Between 1804 and 1812, Tom and Jenny had four children together: Rachel, Jane, George, and Arch. According to the children's birth registration, Jenny and the children were enslaved by the lawyer John Frelinghuysen. Tom was listed as Jenny's husband on the birth registration. Since John Frelinghuysen did not list Tom's last name or the name of a different enslaver for Tom, it appears likely that Tom was also enslaved in the Frelinghuysen household, together with Jenny and their children. The family lived at Millstone (then in Hillsborough township) from about 1804 to 1810. After 1810, John Frelinghuysen moved back to his main property in Bridgewater, now known as the historic General John Frelinghuysen House and located in the present-day borough of Raritan (but then part of Bridgewater township). It can be assumed that Tom's family moved back to Bridgewater with John Frelinghuysen.
