-
Somerset County birth records of enslaved children contain the following record:
Book A, Page 144
Child: Mary
Parents: certificate says "slave Black Parents," but names were not listed
Enslaver of mother and child: David Kirkpatrick
Location: Bernards
Birth date: 19 September 1810
Reported date: 29 August 1814
Clerk: Samuel Swan
This certificate was submitted by David Kirkpatrick Jr. in 1814 shortly after the death of his father David Kirkpatrick Sr. Although this fact is not mentioned explicitly in the document, it can be presumed that David Kirkpatrick Sr. was the original enslaver of Mary and her parents because he was the head of the household when Mary was born in 1810. After David Sr.'s death in 1814, David Jr. inherited his father's homestead in the Mine Brook area of Bernards township and became the head of the household and, presumably, the new legal owner of Mary and her parents. - Event Type
