- Description
-
Mount Laurel is a township in Burlington County. It was originally settled as a village within the boundaries of Evesham Township during the colonial era. It broke off from Evesham and formed a separate municipality in 1872.
Researchers of slavery in Mount Laurel and the surrounding areas may also want to review records filed under Evesham Township, since that was the main administrative entity for this area during the slavery era. Many slavery-era records that mention Evesham are actually referring to various locations in present-day Mount Laurel.
One of the oldest institutions in the area is the Evesham Quaker Friends Meeting House, which was built in 1760. This historic Quaker meeting house has been preserved and continues to serve as an active meeting house today. The meeting house is located in present-day Mount Laurel at 436 Mount Laurel Road, but it retains Evesham as part of its historical name. - Locality
