Evesham is a township in Burlington county, New Jersey. It was formed as Eversham in 1688, but the "R" was later dropped from the name. Evesham was settled by Quakers in the colonial era. The township was originally about four times larger than it is today, and several distinct villages developed within its boundaries, including Medford, Mount Laurel, and Marlton.
The township began to splinter in the 19th century. The southern portion of Evesham was given to Washington township in 1802 (that territory later became part of Shamong). Medford broke off from Evesham in 1847, and then Mount Laurel broke off in 1872. The remaining portion of Evesham township was centered on the village of Marlton. For this reason, the names Evesham and Marlton became virtually interchangeable. Evesham remains the official name of the municipality, but Marlton is seen on many maps, road signs, and institutions in the area.
Many slavery-era records that mention Evesham are actually referring to present-day Mount Laurel, which was part of Evesham until 1872. The Evesham Quaker Friends Meeting House was built in 1760. This historic Quaker meeting house has been preserved and continues to serve as an active meeting house today. It is one of the oldest extant Quaker meeting houses in Burlington County. The meeting house is located in present-day Mount Laurel at 436 Mount Laurel Road, but it retains Evesham as part of its historical name. - Locality
