- Description
-
Swedesboro is a small borough located in Gloucester County, New Jersey, near the Raccoon Creek. It is a so-called "donut hole" municipality, surrounded on all sides by the larger Woolwich Township. Swedesboro was incorporated as a separate municipality in 1902 when the "donut hole" was cut out from the center of Woolwich Township.
The historic community of Swedesboro dates back to the colonial era. In the mid-17th century, the area was settled by Swedes and Finns as part of the short-lived colony of New Sweden, which predates Dutch and English settlement in the Delaware Valley region.
During the New Sweden period, the settlement was known as Sveaborg. Then it was called Raccoon by the English. The name Swedesboro, referring to the borough's Swedish roots, became associated with the community by the mid-18th century. It was often written out as Swedesborough in the 18th and 19th centuries.
During the slavery era in New Jersey, the community of Swedesboro was a major hub within the township of Woolwich. Slavery records pertaining to Swedesboro might be found filed under Woolwich Township, as Swedesboro did not have its own municipal administration until 1902. - Locality
