Biographical Description
John J. Schenck was an enslaver who resided in Hillsborough, Somerset County, New Jersey, in the early 19th century. He was the husband of Sarah Van Neste and son-in-law of Lemmetye Van Neste. Among the people who were enslaved in his household were two different women named Betty, as can be seen in the birth registration documents at the Somerset County Clerk's Office.

John J. Schenck submitted several birth registrations for enslaved children to the Somerset County Clerk. The first certificate listed a mother named Betty who gave birth to Dick on 11 June 1809. Note that, around the same time, Schenck's mother-in-law Lemmetye Van Neste submitted a birth registration for the second woman named Betty (listed as "Bett" on this document), who gave birth to a boy named Jack on 10 April 1809. An 1818 birth registration document indicates that this second woman named Betty or Bett came to live at Schenck's household after the death of Lemmetye Van Neste (deceased in 1816). This document was a delayed registration of birth submitted by John J. Schenck to the County Clerk in April 1818. This delayed registration of birth indicated that the mother Betty gave birth to three children (Dinah, Rompey, and Mary) at the widow Lemmetye Van Neste's house between 1811 and 1815.
