Event Description
Somerset County birth records of enslaved children contain the following record:

Child: Rompey
Mother: Betty
Original enslaver of mother and child: the widow Lemetje Van Neste
Delayed birth registration filed by new enslaver: John J. Schenck
Location: Somerset County (Locality not listed)
Birth date: April 11, 1813
Reported date: April 9, 1818
Clerk: Samuel Swan

John J. Schenck filed a delayed birth registration for Betty's three children Dinah, Rompey, and Mary in 1818, after the death of Schenck's mother-in-law Lemmetye Van Neste (deceased 1816). The delayed birth registration indicated that the children were "born at the widow Lemetje Van Neste's." Although the township was not listed on the birth certificate, Lemmetye Van Neste and John J. Schenck were both known to be residents of Hillsborough, and it can be assumed that the children were born there.
