- Biographical Description
- Tom was a Black man who lived in Montgomery Township, Somerset County, New Jersey, in the early 19th century. He was enslaved by Job Stockton, who died without a will in 1820. Shortly after Job Stockton's death, Tom was manumitted and released from slavery by the administrators of the estate (Ebenezer Stockton and James S. Green), who noted that they performed the manumission "in consideration of the regard the said Job Stockton in his lifetime entertained for his negro slave named Tom."
