Somerset County Register of Black Children, Manumissions, and Removals, Book A, Pages 265-266, contain a manumission deed and certificate for Tom, who was released from slavery on 26 August 1820 in Montgomery. Tom's primary enslaver, Job Stockton, had died earlier in 1820, and the manumission was performed by Ebenezer Stockton and James S. Green, the administrators of the estate of Job Stockton.
In the manumission deed, Ebenezer Stockton and James S. Green noted that they freed Tom "for divers good causes us thereunto moving and also for and in consideration of the regard the said Job Stockton in his lifetime entertained for his negro slave named Tom."
The manumission certificate states that Tom was an adult between 21 and 40 years old, but his exact age was not recorded.
The documents were entered into the book by the County Clerk (Samuel Swan) on 9 September 1820. The manumission certificate was signed by the Overseers of the Poor for the township of Montgomery (William Duryea and Peter Voorhees) and Justices of the Peace for Somerset County (Ralph Sansbury and Josias Ferguson). - Event Type
