- Biographical Description
-
Written variously as Nences Fisher or Nenus Fisher, this was a Black person who lived in Newton, Gloucester County (in present-day Camden County). It appears Nences Fisher lived in the household of Jacob and Abigail Stokes. Jacob Stokes died before May 1805. Nences Fisher was manumitted by the widow Abigail Stokes in 1811, acting jointly with John Stokes (one of the heirs and co-executors of the Jacob Stokes estate).
Note that a person named Pero Fisher had been manumitted from this household in 1805, shortly after the death of Jacob Stokes. The exact relationship between Pero and Nences is uncertain at this time, but based on their last name and household connection, they appear to be related. - Keywords
