- Event Description
-
The following manumission record from Gloucester County was transcribed by the Historical Records Survey Project of the Works Progress Administration. The transcript was originally published in 1940 in the book titled Transcriptions of Early County Records of New Jersey: Gloucester County Series Slave Documents. The transcript is reproduced below as it appeared in that book.
Note that the name of the person being manumitted was transcribed as "Nences Fisher" in one place and "Nenus Fisher" in another section of the document.
The manumission was performed jointly by Abigail Stokes and John Stokes. Although this document does not clarify the relationship between Abigail and John Stokes, other manumission records indicate that Abigail was the widow of a man named Jacob Stokes, and John Stokes was one of the heirs and co-executors of the estate of Abigail's deceased husband.
