- Biographical Description
- Daniel Clark, also known as Benjamin Clark, was a Black man born in November 1781 in Kent County, Delaware. He was born into slavery and was originally enslaved to a man named Jenifer Taylor. In 1810, Jenifer Taylor transferred Clark to Ignatius Taylor, also a resident of Kent County, Delaware (whether this was a sale or another form of transfer is uncertain). Sometime after this, Clark escaped and came to New Jersey, where he settled in Newton Township, Gloucester County (this is now Camden and the surrounding area in Camden County). He did not want to live as a fugitive, and he sought to buy his freedom from Ignatius Taylor so he could be legally free. In 1824, Taylor agreed to let Clark buy his own freedom for the sum of $300. Clark found support in his new community and managed to raise $140 from his friends and allies for the transaction. After receiving $140, Taylor signed a manumission deed, legally freeing Clark. At the same time, Taylor also signed a bond, which stipulated that Clark still owed him the remaining $160.
