- Event Description
-
In 1810, a Black man named Daniel Clark (also called Benjamin Clark) was sold, given, or transferred by his original enslaver Jenifer Taylor to Ignatius Taylor in Kent County, Delaware. Whether this transfer was the result of a sale or another arrangement is uncertain. This transfer of ownership is mentioned in a manumission deed that was filed for Clark years later in 1824 after Clark ran away to New Jersey and bought his own freedom from Ignatius Taylor.
The relevant passage from the manumission deed, which was signed by Ignatius Taylor, reads as follows:
"Daniel Clark otherwise called Benjamin Clark a black man Slave born in the county of Kent in the State of Delaware in the month of November in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Eighty one the Slave of Jenifer Taylor and by him given & delivered to me the Subscriber sometime about the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ten" - Event Type
