- Biographical Description
- Joe was a Black man who lived in Kent County, Maryland, in the late 18th century and was enslaved by Ann Coburn. A manumission deed on file in Gloucester County, New Jersey, shows that Ann Coburn freed Joe in 1798. It is not clear from the document transcript why it was filed in Gloucester County. It is possible that Joe may have come to live in Gloucester County after he gained freedom and brought this document with him.
