-
The following manumission record was transcribed by the Historical Records Survey Project of the Works Progress Administration. The transcript was originally published in 1940 in the book titled Transcriptions of Early County Records of New Jersey: Gloucester County Series Slave Documents. The transcript is reproduced below as it appeared in that book.
Note that the place mentioned in the document is Kent County, Maryland. It is not clear from the transcript why this document was filed in Gloucester County. The original manumission was performed in 1798, but this copy of the document was notarized 11 years later in 1809. It is possible that Joe came to Gloucester County after he was manumitted and filed this notarized copy of the document with county officials there to record his status as a freed man.
