Event Description
The New Jersey Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery created a report enumerating free and enslaved Black people in the townships of Springfield and New Hanover in Burlington County, New Jersey. The report is undated. Other documents in the same file suggest that the society collected these reports circa 1797–1798.

The report lists 42 individuals by name. If we include the additional (unnamed) people in free Black households, there were a total of 83 people of color counted in these two townships. The following columns provide additional information about each named person: Householder, Freeholder, Slave, Industrious, Sober, No. in Family (number of people), and Worth in Dollars (representing the value of the property the person holds). The report does not specify whether each person lived in Springfield or in New Hanover.

Of the 42 named people:
- 3 are listed as slaves, while the remainder are, presumably, free (or possibly indentured for a term of years, but not enslaved for life).
- 17 are listed as householders, meaning that they maintained their own home, rather than living as a servant with a white family; householders list the number of people in their family, ranging from 1 to 6.
- 4 are listed as freeholders, meaning that they owned land or real estate, which entitled them to certain rights and privileges reserved for freeholders.
- 15 people listed "worth in dollars" ranging from $10 to $1,500; 9 of these people were householders, while 6 were not householders, but were nonetheless able to accumulate some personal property.
- Peter Thorn had the largest family, with 6 people in his household, and had a worth of $1,500, making him by far the most prosperous Black resident of this area.
