Gabriel Quon was a Black man who lived in Mansfield in the late 18th century and was enslaved by John Pope. Burlington County records indicate that Gabriel Quon was manumitted and released from slavery on 24 July 1786. His exact age was not recorded at the time of his manumission, but he was between 21 and 35 years old and was described as a "lad," suggesting that he was probably a young man in his 20s. Two of his family members, Sip Quon and Adam Quon, were also manumitted by the Pope family on the same day.
Around 1797, the New Jersey Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery enumerated the free and enslaved Black residents of Springfield and New Hanover townships. Gabriel Quon appears on that list as a householder who is "industrious" and "sober," has 5 people in his family, and personal property worth 40 dollars. His name in that document was written as "Gaberal Pope" with the name "Quan" written next to it afterward. The report, which combined information for the two townships, did not specify whether he lived in Springfield or New Hanover. - Keywords
